Studio Secrets: Layering Light and Fluid Motion with Pébéo XL Oils

As an abstract artist, my practice relies entirely on the interplay of light, depth, and fluid motion. I don't build heavy, blocked-out slabs of paint; instead, I focus on capturing weightless, organic shifts of colour—like sunlight filtering through water or wind moving through trees. To achieve this, my go-to technique is thin, successive layering.
Lately, I’ve been using Pébéo XL Studio Oils in my studio, and they have completely transformed my daily workflow for creating ethereal, luminous pieces. Here is why this affordable paint line has earned a permanent home on my palette.
Artist Profile: Abstract Expressionism & Colour Field
Technique: Fluid blending, soft transitions, and multi-layered glazing
Mediums Used: Odourless mineral spirits & linseed oil blends
1. The Perfect Fluid Base
Right out of the tube, Pébéo XL has a beautifully supple, creamy consistency. When working with thin washes, some student paints break down completely, separating into pools of oil and gritty pigment clusters. Pébéo handles thinning beautifully. When broken down with a touch of solvent for an initial wash, it flows across the canvas smoothly, leaving behind a stained, watercolour-like translucent layer that grabs onto the canvas tooth effortlessly.
2. Seamless Blending for Soft Transitions
For my latest piece—a dynamic composition filled with sweeping organic forms in chartreuse greens, deep indigos, turquoise, and subtle pops of blush pink—soft edges were vital.

The buttery texture of Pébéo allows me to lay down intersecting strokes of pigment and seamlessly feather them into one another. The colours glide into each other without muddying instantly, giving me total control over the hazy, glowing transitions between the cool blues and warm, bright yellows.
3. The Fast-Drying Superpower
If you paint in multiple oil layers, you know the ultimate frustration: waiting weeks for a layer to dry.
Pébéo XL completely solves this bottleneck. Because it is formulated to dry significantly faster than traditional oil brands, my thin glaze layers are completely touch-dry within 3 to 4 days. This quick turnaround allows me to build complex visual depth, glazing cool blues over warm greens in a fraction of the time, without any fear of picking up or scraping away the under-layer.
The Verdict
While master-tier paints have their place for heavy impasto work, Pébéo XL Studio Oils are a dream for the abstract layering artist. They offer a smooth flow, high bendability, and a fast dry-time that keeps my creative momentum moving forward.
